8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.

9. The Grinch or the Burgermeister/Meisterburger?
The Grinch
10. Do you have a special family Christmas tradition?
Yes. My Dad and my Mom-in-law (and my own Mom and sister this year too) come over to our place for Christmas "dinner" (I make lasagna and cheesecake.) Then we open gifts, watch a movie (because someone inevitably gets a DVD for Christmas), then go to my mom-in-law's best friend's house (who is as much a part of the family as anyone else) and have another dinner (the real thing - turkey, ham, etc.) Then we typically play cards or something like that.

For those who celebrate Hanukkah:

1. Do you decorate your home?

Yes I decorate, but the amount of decorations vary each year.

2. Do you put up a Hanukkah bush?

*smacks Carey* No Hanukah bush. We have a big wooden star covered in foil with lights on it that we put up sometimes and the presents go under it.

3. Do you send out cards? (Are there Hanukkah cards? If so I've never gotten one. *pout*)

Yes I send out Hanukah, Christmas, and Season's Greetings cards. Send me your address and I'll send you a Hanukah card.

4. How many menorrahs do you have? (If I were Jewish I would totally collect menorrahs. I think they are gorgeous.)

I know several people who collect menorahs. I have 3.

5. What the heck is a matzoh ball and do you just put them in soup?

Matzo balls are fluffy things that you put in soup. They're made from matzo meal which is like flour, eggs, and water. When you put them in the soup, they are about the size of a 1" ball. When they expand in the soup, they're about the size of a 3" ball. There are sinkers and there are floaters. *no wisecracks please*
Once again, if you send me your address, I will send you a box of "instant matzo meal mix" and you can easily make them yourself.

6. Hanukkah songs? I know the dreidel song, but are there others?

O Hanukah O Hanukah come light the menorah...
Light One Candle by Peter, Paul and Mary
There are lots of other ones, too.

7. If Santa was Jewish would he still say "ho ho ho"?

He'd say Oy Vey, my back hurts. I can't shlep these presents around any longer. I hope the next house leaves me some shnaps.

8. Is it "Hanukkah" or "Chanukah"? Oy vey!

It's transliterated from Hebrew, so it can be spelled any way.

9. Are there Hanukkah cookies? If so, what is your favorite?

Yes there are Hanukah cookies. Most are sugar cookies with blue sprinkles. We can make them in the shape of menorahs and dreidels, too.

10. Do you have a special family Hanukkah tradition?

Anything cooked in oil is a Hanukah tradition. Some people serve donuts. We take a 10 lb. bag of potatoes and spend all day making hundreds of potato latkes (potato pancakes).

1. When do you put up your Christmas tree?
I don't put up a tree. It's just me at the house, and I always go to my parents house, so there's no point.

2. Real or artificial?
If I was to put up a tree, it would be artificial. I hate trying to vacuum up all those needles.

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?
No.

4. If "yes" to #3, when?
n/a

5. Christmas cards: Religious or non-denominational?
I like to send sarcastic ones.

6. Favorite Christmas carol/song.
I don't think I have a favorite.

Charlie Brown Christmas.

8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.
Magic Cookie Bars.

1. When do you put up your Christmas tree?
Usually around the 8th of December.

2. Real or artificial?
Real of course.

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?
Yes. Spiral trees, a lighted deer, a star if I can get Tom to put it up. Wreathe and garland on the front door.

4. If "yes" to #3, when?
Outdoor stuff needs to be staked before the ground freezes so usually the spiral trees & stuff go out around Thanksgiving, but I don't "light up" until December 1.

5. Christmas cards: Religious or non-denominational?
Usually non-, but this year I am sending out Three Wisemen cards. They were so pretty I couldn't resist plus I am a fan of the three wise men story. In my mind, they are pagans because if they were Jewish it would have said so.

6. Favorite Christmas carol/song.
Let Therre Be Peace On Earth and O Holy Night.

7. Favorite Christmas movie/cartoon.
It's a Wonderful Life and the 1932 B&W version of A Christmas Carole.

8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.
Sugar cookie dough.

9. The Grinch or the Burgermeister/Meisterburger?
Grinch. I don't know who the Burgermeister is.

10. Do you have a special family Christmas tradition?
The Sock. I'll blog about it sometime.

1. I put it up this weekend because I had the time and energy. Last year I didn't even bother since I was still in the depths of despair. I'm very happy to have one this year.

2. Artificial simply because I got sick and tired of cleaning up needles for months afterward.

3. Just a wreath.

4. Same day.

5. Non-denominational. I try usually for funny ones or ones that say Happy Holidays.

6. Hate Christmas songs. Don't have one.

7. Definitely "A Christmas Story."

8. Ooooo, my sister makes some truly delicious lady locks.

9. Oh, the Grinch.

10. Not so much family as friends. I go to a big Christmas Eve party with all my IRL friends at our local watering hole, which is closed to all but invited guests. We have a lovely time. Family Christmas is pretty laid back as I no longer have to spend time with XDBF's family and mine don't get together until about 3pm to do our gift exchange and then eat like pigs. Since my parents are both gone, it's not as big a blowout at the old homestead (which one of my sisters bought and in which we still have all our family gatherings).

5. Non-denominational. I have very few friends who celebrate Christmas actually.

6. U2's Baby Please Come Home Christmas

7. Rudolph will always be my favorite.

8. Rum balls

9. Burgermeister

10. FInd the pickle! Oh and Baileys in my cocoa. WE are trying to create new traditions with our kids each year. So far for the second year in a row we are making a gingerbread house and little presents for family from the kids. I want the kids to understand the giving part naturally instead of all the gimmes!

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?
Yep...how much depends on the weather.

I totally forgot I have a totally energetic new kitten this year. Which means the tree must be secured to the ceiling so she can't bring it crashing down.

*sigh* I have umpty-bazillion little soft sculpture angels I hang on my tree. Kitty can probably gut one angel per day without destroying the whole look - but if she goes for muliple angels every day then I am in trouble.

The angels are all naked, with little dimpled belly buttons and little dimpled buttcracks. Tippy Toes (my older cat) usually picks one angel to strip off the tree and "play" with. Maybe Gracie will learn from him and limit herself to one.

1. Do you decorate your home?
I'll probably just put up the Menorahs I have.

2. Do you put up a Hanukkah bush?
I've never had a tree. Or bush or shrub.

3. Do you send out cards? (Are there Hanukkah cards? If so I've never gotten one. *pout*)
I can send you a Hanukkah card if you'd like. I'm really bad about sending them though.

4. How many menorrahs do you have? (If I were Jewish I would totally collect menorrahs. I think they are gorgeous.)
I have one that's shaped like an oil lamp that's my great grandmother's and I love it. All the different colored bits of wax are still stuck to it. Leah got me one a couple years ago that's silver and looks lovely with blue and white candles.

5. What the heck is a matzoh ball and do you just put them in soup?
Yummmm... so fluffy and delicious.
I can make you some sometime. My matzoh ball soup is just like Bubbies....

6. Hanukkah songs? I know the dreidel song, but are there others?
There are some very nice songs in Hebrew... we sing a lovely song when we light the menorah.

7. If Santa was Jewish would he still say "ho ho ho"?
He might say "oy, oy, oy"

8. Is it "Hanukkah" or "Chanukah"? Oy vey!
Let me let you in on a little secret....
It's a bunch of Hebrew letters. There isn't a right way to spell it. Sometimes we correct people just to fuck with the gentiles.
Err.....

9. Are there Hanukkah cookies? If so, what is your favorite?
Leah makes lovely chocolates in Hanukkah shapes... And rugula...yummmmm

10. Do you have a special family Hanukkah tradition?
We used to have all the presents around the table... and open gifts each night while lighting the menorah. We'd take turns lighting the candles, each kid.
Now one of us hosts the family for dinner, we light the menorah and trade presents. It's nice.

Swami - your comment about attaching the tree to the ceiling reminds me of a local store that did just that this year. It's a gift shop type of place and they always put up about 6 trees with ornaments for sale. Now, they have one inverted, with the stand attached to the ceiling. Maybe they were inspired by the DaVinci Code or something. It looks cool when we drive by at night though.

11/28/2006 6:50 AM
Blogger Swami said...

Okay, I wasn't thinking totally upside down here - cool as that might be. I am not that avant-garde or whatever. We just have a hook in one of the ceiling beams so we can attach a wire from the treetop to the ceiling.

Kitty climbs my Benjamin Ficus all the time. I have a very cute wood sprite man/figurine thing hanging way up on the ficus tree and she is always trying to climb up & bat him around. This does not bode well for my ornaments.

1. When do you put up your Christmas tree?

The second weekend of December, sometimes earlier. If I had a pre-lit, I would do it right after Thanksgiving.

2. Real or artificial?

Real.

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?

Yes. I put a wreath on each window, and it hangs down from the top with a red ribbon. There are also red ribbons on the wreathes. I put a candle in each window. I have a wreath on the front door that has two bells and a red bow. We also put a spotlight in the yard. I am entertaining the thought of a reindeer or two this year. I have always wanted a house with perfect windows for my wreathes, and I finally have one.

4. If "yes" to #3, when?

That was supposed to have been done this weekend, but I had to redo the bows and ribbons. So we will probably do it one night this week.

5. Christmas cards: Religious or non-denominational?

Non-deminational. Michael likes winter scenes. I like funny. Since I buy them, I get to pick. And I didn't send any last year. *gasp*

6. Favorite Christmas carol/song.

Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas."

7. Favorite Christmas movie/cartoon.

I don't really have one.

8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.

I'm prone to chocolate chip all the time.

9. The Grinch or the Burgermeister/Meisterburger?

The Grinch.

10. Do you have a special family Christmas tradition?

Not really, but we need one.

1. When do you put up your Christmas tree?

We put it up on the weekend. A little early this year. Usually the first weekend in December.

2. Real or artificial?

Artificial!

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?

Our lights stay up all year. months.

4. If "yes" to #3, when?

They are only turned on during the month of December.

5. Christmas cards: Religious or non-denominational?

Non-denominational. Normally I go for funny. This year I went for cheap.

6. Favorite Christmas carol/song.

Dave's is Blue Christmas by Elvis. I don't really have one favorite. I like lots of them.

7. Favorite Christmas movie/cartoon.

The original Grinch, baby!!!

8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.

Shortbread! Melt in the mouth goodness.

9. The Grinch or the Burgermeister/Meisterburger?

The Grinch or who? Gotta be the Grinch.

10. Do you have a special family Christmas tradition?

Yes, try to spend as little time as possible with the in-laws.

Now I have to sing a Christmas Carol because our family tradition is that if you say something not so nice during the Christmas season, you have to sing a carol.

*sings* I'...ll have a blue Christmas without Augie!

Blogger Monstah said...

Hello Augie. I will happily take part in your survey.

1. When do you put up your Christmas tree?

We have trees. One is the formal tree for the palor. It has an air of Martha Stewart trimmings. Then we have the family tree in the family room. It has memorable ornaments, homemade ones from children etc. Oh and this year, it has Fred the Muppet on the top. He is a blue furry muppet (from "Go to Bed Fred") and Nathaniel loves him. We have decided to use Fred as our angel for decades to come. It is a new tradition.

2. Real or artificial?

Both are real, although there is talk of getting a pre-lit, artificial one for the family tree next year.

3. Do you decorate the outside of your home?

Yes but I have people decorate. I am really not crafty or talented in any way what so ever. Once the children get a bit older we may do a fun christmas display out back...otherwise it is traditional wreaths and white lights in the front yard. My front yard will never be a Christmas circus. I am a stickler for public displays of tradition.

4. If "yes" to #3, when?

I got so off topic, I forgot what number three asked. Was it decorating? I guess we do that first weekend after Thanksgiving...or first weekend in December maybe.

5. Christmas cards: Religious or non-denominational?

I usually send ones out spreading Christmas cheer. I print "Merry Christmas" on them rather than "Happy Holidays" becuase that is what I celebrate.

6. Favorite Christmas carol/song.

Oh Come All Ye Faithful and Holy Night.

7. Favorite Christmas movie/cartoon.

Twas the Night Before Christmas

8. Favorite Chrismas cookie.

anything on the cookie table.

9. The Grinch or the Burgermeister/Meisterburger?

That is like asking Bravie or Nookie? How can one possibly chose?

10. Do you have a special family Christmas tradition?

We celebrate Christmas Eve actually. Strangely enough, Jim's family did too growing up. In my family we eat seven fishes and pasta (Italian tradiction) and then we open our gifts. (Woot!) In the morning we would go downstairs and our stockings would be stuffed from Santa.

sidenote: suddenly,I feel sick and need to throw up, I think. My cod, girls are hard to bake. :(
