You know what I'm sick of?

I'm sick of people automatically assuming new people on OT are spammers or banned peeps trying to get one over on us, or have some dark alterior motive. Almost every time someone new posts there is a gaggle of smartasses making insinuations that this new person is someone other than what they say they are.

What ever happened to a simple "Welcome to OT"? What ever happened to "Hi, nice to meet you"? So what if this person is not what they say they are? If they are a banned person coming back that is up to Webby or Ayak to determine. If they are spammers, Webby or Ayak will take care of them. When did these smartass peeps get deputy badges and become the OT Posse? It is my understanding that the mods are the ones who determine a person's "post worthiness". Why is it anyone else's business? The guidelines say to alert the thread. Simple directions, huh? Alert the thread and let it go. Let the mods do their job.

One point made today on OT was "why do these people only have one post"? I think it's obvious. We (the collective OT "we") are so fucking rude to them that they turn away never to come back. If I had been treated that way the first time I posted on OT I wouldn't have come back either.

You know what people need to do? People need to ask themselves "what would Buggy do?" because I think Buggy is one of the kindest, smartest, nicest peeps out there. She has such compassion and wisdom. We should all try to be more Buggy-like, not only on OT or the blogs, but in life.

So the next time someone feels the need to judge or snark or make a less than nice comment, they should ask themselves "What would Buggy do?". The answer would be crystal clear.

Thanks MM. We need to try to get back to the kinder, gentler OT. Or at least the politer OT. :-)

*smooch* to you too

Yikes! Don't ask what Buggy would do! ( she's so mean)

I agree with the jumping on someone the minute they post. Just because someone is unfamilier doesn't mean they are a spammer or a troll. Sure they might be, but how can you know if they aren't doing anything against the rules?
There is a lot of faux modding going on, I try to ignore it, but the best course is contacting the folks in charge.

Oh, and I thought of you at work today, when someone said, " I wish it was Summer again."

Buggy, you are NOT mean. Not by a long shot. You are one of the best things about OT, and I truly mean that.

*sigh* I wish it was summer too. It snowed again today. ICK on the snow.

*sigh* You're not going to like me anymore after this, I know it.

As CSTL pointed out in his post (with links and all) in the last three weeks, there have been 3 almost identical posts, all first time posters saying almost exactly the same thing and then they never post again. Now I can see being upset about peeps jumping on the first one or even the second, but the third time? I don't believe for a second that 'crazydelicious' is an above-board poster just looking to join the community.

Just my two cents.

Awwww, I could never not like you TKit. But really, it's not up to anyone but the mods or Webby to decide if a poster is a spammer or something other than what they say they are. And it's not just the reaction to crazydelicious, or just_kidding, or whoever else it was. Buggy is right, people have appointed themselves as mods and have taken it upon themselves to police the board. If someone thinks a post is spam, I see no problem in posting to it by saying "alerting as spam" then walking away. That's what the guidelines say. As it stands now, we have this little OT mafia going around being snarky and mean to what *seems* like a perfectly innocent post. Is it innocent? I don't know, and right now I don't care. I'm sure crazydelicious is not what she/he says they are. But who cares? So they make a stupid post and leave, never to be seen again.

Truthfully? I think crazydelicious/just_kidding has gotten exactly what they set out for...a reaction from the community. If he/she is really a troll then the mods or Webby will take care of them.

Last time I checked only Ayak has a blue peep next to his name and he is the mod for the OT forum.

Yeah, you're right.

I feel bad for being snarky to the Granny now (who may actually have been legit).

I think OT is still nice and welcoming to real posters. There just haven't been any recently. Maybe we need a welcome newbie thread.

But then when you welcome someone and they aren't "real", you feel silly and then upset and when people get upset they often snark.

I usually just ignore questionable posts.

I am one of those assholes who makes smartass remakrs to first time posters. but i don't worry about you not loving me. You are my sistah. And I don't worry about you not liking Tkit because she is my internet girlfriend and I know that you would never not like my internet girlfriend. *Big grin*

I don't pretend to be a mod, or even play one on OT. Do I have to be all nice and shit now that you posted this?
I mean, I have pretty good instincts. Remember the whole B-12 fiasco? I was right there with PC just a picking away at the looney, I mean the nice new poster. Oh yes I was.
You're going to yell at me now, aren't you?

Just because I am feeling rebelious? I posted in the thread by Bluelies (or whatever) and that thread is certain to get locked. I felt dirty doing it and it was fun and I'll do it again.

Carey, Miss B-12 had quite a bit of posts by the time she left and if I remember correctly she had started linking to a site where she was selling B-12. That is a no-no, but it was up to the mods to tell her that. You and PC were both lucky you didn't get banned. IMHO. You probably didn't get banned because Miss B-12 was indeed a looney, but both you and PC pushed the boundries on that one.

My point is how on earth can anyone determine AFTER ONE POST that someone is not who they say they are? What ever happened to giving people a chance? If crazydelicous or just_kidding come back and want to play, why not let them? And if they only want to post once and leave, that's their choice too. It's Webby forum, not your's, not mine, not anyone else's.

I'm just really disgusted by the quick to judge attitude that has taken over OT. Just because you think CD or J_k is disingenous doesn't mean she/he/they are. Give people a chance. The real asswipes/trolls/losers will rise to the top soon enough and will either leave or get banned. No need to scare everyone away so quickly.

I definitely agree with you Augie. Let the official mods handle things. When I first started posting, it was on OT. Thank goodness I had a warm welcome. Not sure if I'd have that nowadays. We don't even have time to give out crapbaskets because peeps are so quick to run newbies off.

The real issue... it's not necessarily the one post posters like j_k or crazy that are being chased away. It's the lurkers, the new poster on the Survivor boards that saw a reference to OT and wandered over to check it out. They click on a few threads to read and get a feel... and what do they see?

Well I see that I set off quite the firestorm and I would hope that anyone that knows me, knows that I'm not a newbie basher. I definitely agree that a lot of people are quick to judge newbies and make them feel not so welcome. In this case and this case only, I just couldn't help but notice that all three people said nearly the same thing and appeared to just be there to get a reaction as you said from us. That is what I was pointing out, a pattern.

I dont think I've ever tried to play mod or tell anyone else how to post but I just thought it warranted notice that maybe someone is playing a joke on us, new and old alike.

Well, I don't read OT anymore so I don't know what's going on there. I do remember that OT culture changes and rearranges according to both who is posting and which post get responsed to.

People who want to join the great on-going conversation usually do just that. They start contributing.

People who want to provoke some kind of reaction right off the bat may be either trying too hard to join, not interested in joining but they stumbled onto OT so they just shoot & leave, or they have come just to cause trouble. Time will sort them out.

I concur with Swami. It was definitely not my intention to offend anyone so I apologize if I did. I didn't see the granny post till this morning but I wouldn't have said the same about her. It's not my place to try and determine what's a genuine post and what's not but I guess in calling out crazydelicious I did just that so can I be both right and wrong at the same time?

I tend to agree, although I can think of one recent instance where a "newbie" ripped on all of us for an incredibly long post. In that case, I'm all about the lynch mob.

However, if it's not OBVIOUS spam, I think the best thing is to say hello & welcome. Ignore if you think it MIGHT be spam/someone with an alterior motive.

Wow, I just re-read my comment & it isn't very coherent. So now, I'll just say that I 98% agree with Augie.

Blogger lights said...

Um Swami? Shouldn't you be busy writing part 3?

CSTL, what you said about someone playing a joke on us and wanting to point that out made me think. There have been many times I have found posts that made me feel the same way and I've been tempted to make a comment too.

I don't because, a) I feel that is the mod's jobs and if I have any concerns I should alert it, and b) I also feel that we only encourage more of those types of posts by responding. If it is a troll, we feed it by making comments. If you think we're being fooled, alert it and ignore it. But that's just my opinion.

I agree with Kim about the "newbie" who just wanted to chew us all out for something that s/he perceived to be a shortcoming of the community.

2/23/2006 12:42 PM
Blogger yvonne said...

I do remember that newbie who had a grudge. She totally warranted a bashing. That is totally different than someone just posting "hi, i'm new".

Anyway, my last thoughts...

I just wish people would remember that there are real live human beings with emotions behind those screen names. If I had just stumbled on OT today there is no way in hell I'd post there. Too intimidating. There's too much meanness in real life to get a load of it on cyber space too, especially when it's supposed to be a fun playground. No kind of playground I want to go to.

And a big smooch to CSTL because like I told him in a PM, it was NOT his post that upset me. It was the fact that the very first post to CD was rude. The first one. What kind of OT have we become? *sigh* I hope we get back to a kinder, gentler, but still fun OT soon.

In the meantime, can't we all just get along?

*grin*
